When Do Wisdom Teeth Require Extraction?

At Dentist @ Westleigh, our professional dentist will examine your wisdom teeth using digital imagery to determine if they are healthy and growing in their correct positions. If wisdom tooth removal is required, however, it is most commonly due to the following issues:

• Pain or discomfort
• Not enough space for the tooth to erupt (impaction)
• Cysts, tumours, or other pathology are present
• Wisdom tooth growing on an angle
• Damage caused to adjacent teeth
• Severe gum disease
• Decay present

The Wisdom Tooth Extraction Process: What to Expect

If our dentist has advised your wisdom tooth (or teeth) to be removed, then you can rest easy knowing that it is a relatively straight-forward procedure. Depending on how many teeth you’re having extracted, as well as how impacted they are, you will either have your extraction completed in our practice, or under general anaesthesia at the local hospital.

Once the area being treated is completely numb, the dentist or oral surgeon will begin by removing the gum tissue that’s covering your wisdom tooth. If the tooth is impacted, a slightly deeper incision will be made. Special tools are then used to gently loosen the tooth until it can be completely removed from the socket. In some cases, it will then be necessary for the surgeon to stitch the gum tissue where the incision was made. Painkillers and antibiotics will also be prescribed to allow the patient to heal quickly and correctly once the procedure is over.
