What Is a Dental Implant
A dental implant is a tooth replacement option that involves placing a small titanium post into the jawbone. This post acts as the root component of the replacement tooth. Once the area has healed, an abutment is attached to the post, and a custom-made crown is fitted on top.
Â
The result is a tooth replacement that is designed to function like a natural tooth. It's supported by the bone rather than by adjacent teeth, which is what distinguishes it from a bridge or a denture.
Â
Dental implants have a well-established clinical track record. Dr. Aldrin Bautista at Dentist @ Westleigh can discuss the process, candidacy, and what to expect at a consultation.
Implant treatment is a staged process. Here's what's typically involved
Your implant journey will start with initial consult with Dr. Aldrin, he will will review your overall dental health condition. This assessment determines whether implants are a suitable option for your situation. Diagnostic records are taken with 3D digital planning and presentation of your case.
Step 1:
Initial consultation and assessment
Once healing is confirmed, the abutment and custom crown are fitted. Your dentist checks the fit and bite, and makes any adjustments needed.
Step 5:
Crown placement
The bone needs time to integrate around the implant, a process known as osseointegration. This typically takes several months (3-6 mos, though the exact duration varies by individual. Dr. Aldrin will advise on the expected timeframe based on your case.
Step 4:
Healing period
The titanium post is placed into the jawbone under local anaesthetic. After placement, the area is given time to heal.
Step 3:
Implant placement
If you decide to proceed, Dr. Aldrin develops a treatment plan specific to your case. This covers the number of implants, the sequence of treatment, and any preparatory work that may be needed (such as bone grafting in some cases).

Candidacy Factors
Not everyone is a candidate for dental implants. Suitability depends on a range of factors, and Dr. Aldrin will assess these at your consultation. Key factors include:

The right place to find out whether you're a suitable candidate is a consultation with Dr. Aldrin. He'll give you an honest assessment based on your individual situation

Bone density and volume
The jawbone needs enough density to support the implant post. In some cases where bone has been lost, a bone graft may be recommended first Dr. Aldrin will advise if this applies to you
Gum health
Active gum disease needs to be addressed before implant treatment can proceed.
Overall health
Certain medical conditions and medications can affect healing and candidacy. Dr. Aldrin will review your full medical history.
Smoking
Smoking affects healing and can influence the long-term outcome. This will be discussed at your consultation
Investment
Dental implant investment varies depending on the number of implants, whether preparatory work is required, and the complexity of your case.
