About gum disease
Gum disease also called periodontal disease is a common condition that affects the gum tissue and, in more advanced cases, the supporting bone around teeth. It develops when bacterial plaque builds up along and below the gum line. In many cases, early signs of gum disease can be addressed with professional treatment and consistent home care.

There are two main stages:

Gingivitis inflammation of the gums, often indicated by bleeding when brushing. This stage responds well to professional cleaning and improved home care.

Periodontitis is a more advanced stage where the infection spreads to the supporting structures around the teeth. Management typically involves more thorough cleaning and ongoing monitoring.

Treatments available
Periodontal assessment
A periodontal assessment measures the depth of the pockets between teeth and gums and identifies any areas where the gum tissue has been affected. It is the starting point for understanding what treatment, if any, is needed.
Scale and clean
A scale and clean removes plaque and tartar (calculus) from the tooth surfaces and along the gum line. For most patients this is part of a routine checkup; for patients with early signs of gum disease it is often the first step in a management plan.
Scaling and root planing (deep clean)
Where plaque and tartar have built up below the gum line, a deeper clean called scaling and root planing may be recommended. This involves cleaning the root surfaces of teeth to address bacterial deposits beneath the gums. It is typically done under local anaesthesia and may require more than one appointment depending on the extent of treatment needed.
Ongoing monitoring
For patients managing established gum disease, more frequent checkups and cleans are often recommended. We will advise on an appropriate schedule based on your situation.
